Following Todd Boehly’s spending spree of over £1billion, the new ownership of the club are now keen on selling players to balance the books, and avoid FFP drama.
Reports now claim that Chelsea are planning to sell captain Reece James this summer in an effort to balance their books and comply with financial fair play rules.
Earlier this month, Chelsea announced a pre-tax loss of £90.1million in the year to 30 June 2023. This has raised concerns that the club would fall short of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules.
Chelsea are in dire need of new cash inflow before the end of June this year.
A shortcut to comply with PSR is to sell homegrown, academy players, as those deals count as 100 percent profit.
Conor Gallagher and Ian Maatsen has also been tipped to be sold this summer to help balance the books, and Reece James is now the latest name.
According to The Times, Chelsea’s hierarchy believe they can generate in excess of £60m for the Blues captain.
Reece James is one of the club’s most valuable players, and was handed the armband last summer, to prove his worth at the club.
Rumours have it that the Chelsea board feel the club can do without James following his injury problems. James has been plagued by injuries this season, which has limited the 24-year-old to just five Premier League starts this season. He only made 14 starts last season.
