Chelsea told they overpaid for player every top club wanted to sign

Former Chelsea defender, Glen Johnson has claimed that the Blues paid way more for Moises Caicedo than the South American star is actually worth.

Caicedo joined Chelsea for £115m back in the summer transfer window after something of a tussle between the West Londoners and Liverpool.

After Chelsea had reached an agreement with the midfielder, Liverpool agreed terms to sign him from Brighton for about £100m, but the Ecuadorian insisted on honouring his word to Chelsea, forcing Jurgen Klopp’s side to pull out of the race.

Chelsea did get their man in the end, but they also had to pay £15m more than their rivals had offered, and Johnson is now suggesting that the fee should never have gotten that high because he isn’t worth it.

“Caicedo is a bloody good player, but I don’t think he’s living up to the massive hype when Liverpool and Chelsea were fighting over him and it was talk of the town,” Johnson said on BetFred.

“What I think Liverpool have done there is cost Chelsea a hell of a lot more money and I don’t think he’s living up to that hype.

“He’s a good player. Was he worth the price tag? Probably not.

“Brighton only had one chance to sell him, so they obviously tried to ride that hype to get as much money as they possibly could for him, but for me, he’s not living up to that hype.

“I would still say he’s a good signing, but not for that price.”
