Newcastle legend, Alan Shearer has shared his surprise at Mauricio Pochettino’s comments, following Chelsea’s 2-0 loss to Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Blues succumbed to their third defeat in their last four games, with their captain, Reece James, pulling out of the contest with a hamstring injury halfway through the first half.

Pochettino’s side have now moved down to 12th place on the table after the defeat, leaving them 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.

After the game, the Chelsea manager spoke with the press, and admitted he needed to get more players into his squad in January to help them move further up the table— something that Shearer finds unbelievable, judging by the mammoth amount of money the Blues have spent in the last three windows.

He told the Rest Is Football podcast: “Did you hear Poch saying about the need for players in January? It was only six or seven months ago we were saying they had too many players. In the last two years or 18 months it’s something like £960 million. Just under a billion. They have spent on players.

“I know he wasn’t involved yesterday but they have spent all that and a 39-year-old is still their best centre half in Silva and they haven’t got a centre forward.

“I mean whoever is buying those players to give to the coach, someone needs to seriously have a look at themselves because whatever they are giving the coach at the minute is nowhere near good enough and they are spending an absolute fortune on players and have wasted so much, and they have given a lot of them eight year contracts. My goodness.”
