TalkSPORT pundit, Stuart Pearce has told Chelsea that Conor Gallagher should have no business captaining their first team at this stage of his career.
Gallagher, 23, has had to lead the Blues on many occasions this season, not for reasons within his control, but because the players who were originally charged with that responsibility have been unavailable through injuries.
Chelsea captain, Reece James, and his assistant, Ben Chilwell have missed large parts of the season with respective injury concerns, leaving Mauricio Pochettino with no choice, but to hand the armband to Gallagher.
Gallagher, to be fair, has been very consistent this season, with some people even hailing his maturity and improvement under Chelsea’s new management, however, Pearce, who recently appeared on talkSPORT, doesn’t think the midfielder has what it takes to captain a side like Chelsea.
“When I look – and I’ve got nothing against him because I love the kid and I think he’s got a bright future Conor Gallagher,” Pearce said.
“But when I see Chelsea Football Club, who have got perceptions on winning the league, being led out, captained by Conor Gallagher.
“I’m thinking to myself, ‘This is Chelsea Football Club that’s had a captain like John Terry, that’s got the stature of John Terry’.
“Conor might be a fantastic captain in time to come.
“But for him to lead Chelsea out at this moment in time, it’s too soon.”
