Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand doesn’t think Conor Gallagher should be starting ahead of Phil Foden in central midfield.

Foden and Gallagher both started in the defeat to Brazil. Foden played out wide on the right, while the Chelsea man played in midfield.

Conor Gallagher has earned his place in the England squad, following his Chelsea performances this season, but Rio Ferdinand doesn’t think he’s better than Foden in that position.

Ferdinand told FIVE’s YouTube channel: “Foden, in the central areas, for the best team in Europe, this season, has been playing centrally and been the guy they’ve looked to for inspirational moments to get them results and unlock things.

“And I’m sitting there thinking… I like Conor Gallagher, I think he’s got a place in that squad right now, but I think that Phil Foden – just on performance only, forget about what you think of him as a talent – why’s he not playing in there?”
