Gary Neville has slammed Chelsea’s decision to buy one super-talented player last summer.

The Blues paid £115m to sign Moises Caicedo from Brighton, despite competition from the likes of Liverpool.

Chelsea also signed Romeo Lavia from Southampton for £54m in the same window – another player that was courted by the Reds.

While Caicedo has played nearly every minute of football for Chelsea since his arrival at Stamford Bridge last summer, the same hasn’t been the case for Lavia.

The 19-year-old’s debut season for Chelsea has been plagued with injuries, with the Belgian making just a single appearance for the Blues all season.

While speaking during a recent episode of The Overlap, former Manchester United defender, Gary Neville said he couldn’t understand why Chelsea would go for Lavia when they already had Enzo Fernandez, Caicedo and Conor Gallagher, and went on to claim that the Blues only bought the player because of their ‘ego’.

He said: “They [Chelsea] went and bought Enzo, they go and buy Caicedo and then through their ego they went and bought Lavia on the final day of the transfer window for £54m and then they have to sell Conor Gallagher? They didn’t need Lavia, he’s not even played a game for them anyway.”

Lavia has had a very sad debut season for Chelsea, but it would be falsehood to claim that he won’t become useful for the club once he regains full fitness.

With the amount of injuries that have plagued Chelsea in recent seasons, we do think it is a wise decision to get enough quality cover in certain areas of the pitch. So Gary Neville is wrong in his assessment of the decision to buy Lavia last summer.
