Chelsea prepared to pay €100million for Barcelona star keen on leaving in the summer

Chelsea are gearing up to place an £85million (€100m) offer for Frenkie de Jong amid growing uncertainty about his future at Barcelona, according to Spanish media outlet Sport via Metro.

Throughout the 2022 summer, Manchester United pursued the Dutch international, with Erik ten Hag marking him as a top acquisition after taking the helm at Old Trafford. Although Barcelona was amenable to parting with de Jong, he opted to stay with the club.

The 26-year-old was instrumental in Barcelona securing their first La Liga title since 2019 last season. However, recent reports indicate he might be considering a departure after the current season ends.

Concerns within the Barcelona management about de Jong’s future have surfaced, and they are reportedly contemplating his sale to bolster the club’s financial situation.

De Jong, one of Barcelona’s highest-paid players, has two years remaining on his contract. Efforts to renew his contract have stalled, with knowledge that clubs like Chelsea, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain are eager to sign him.

Despite Manchester United’s persistent interest since 18 months ago, Chelsea are now prepared to make a significant €100m bid for him.

Over the past year, Chelsea has invested £280m in midfield reinforcements, starting with Enzo Fernandez’s £107m transfer from Benfica and followed by a record £114m for Moises Caicedo from Brighton. Additionally, Chelsea acquired Romeo Lavia from Southampton for £58m, though he has played only 32 minutes this season due to injuries and fitness issues.

Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has made efforts to initiate contract extension talks with de Jong, but the player’s high salary has made it challenging to even begin negotiations.
