England nearly produced a spectacular comeback victory against Germany, but their performance was marred by defensive errors.

First on the error list was Harry Maguire who conceded a needless penalty to hand Germany the opening goal of the game.

Ilkay Gundogan converted from the spot, and Kai Havertz scored a spectacular stunning goal to give the Germans a two-goal lead.

However, a fine performance from some Chelsea players helped change the narrative for the Three Lions.

Reece James assisted Luke Shaw for England’s first, before Mason Mount scored a spectacular stunning goal to seal a comeback. Harry Kane converted from the spot to make it 3-2, but a mistake from goalkeeper Nick Pope handed Kai Havertz a free chance to make the scores 3-3.

Speaking after the game, Reece James gave words of encouragement to Harry Maguire, and also hailed Mount for a fine performance.

He said: “I think when you’re playing and you make a mistake you don’t need to be told. I feel like you’re experienced enough to know you’ve made a mistake and you don’t need to be told.

“Harry hasn’t been playing too much this season. He’s still finding his rhythm. We know the quality he has. There’s no doubts. It’s just a little step up and I’m sure they (Maguire and Pope) will bounce back and be stronger.”

On Mount’s special substitute performance, James added: “I don’t really have to talk too much about Mason.

“The last three years everyone can see how good he is and what he provides. Whenever he gets a chance he likes to bring the best he can and provide for the team.”
