Sports lawyer Catherine Forshaw has discussed the potential legal and financial ramifications for Chelsea following Mykhailo Mudryk’s positive doping test, suggesting the club might take legal action against the Ukrainian Association of Football (UAF) if the winger is suspended.

“If Mudryk faces sanctions, Chelsea may consider terminating his eight-year contract depending on its terms. A four-year suspension would significantly affect the club financially,” Forshaw explained.

She highlighted the possibility of Chelsea pursuing legal action against the UAF if Mudryk is charged and suspended. “Chelsea could sue the UAF if Mudryk is charged and suspended, depending on where the fault lies. If others, such as Mudryk’s support staff, are involved, Chelsea might pursue them legally.”

Forshaw also addressed the implications of a lengthy suspension: “If Mudryk receives a suspension of over two years, Chelsea would likely terminate his contract rather than wait out the ban.”

However, even if Mudryk is exonerated, Forshaw noted that compensation for temporary suspension might not be an option: “If Mudryk is exonerated, he is unlikely to secure compensation for temporary suspension, as he remains responsible for substances in his body per Premier League and global anti-doping rules.”

Forshaw concluded by noting that Mudryk could pursue legal action against liable parties if he proves his innocence and demonstrates financial damages.

As the investigation continues, Forshaw’s insights underline the complex legal landscape Chelsea and Mudryk may navigate depending on the outcome.
