Chelsea defender, Thiago Silva has tendered an unreserved apology to Chelsea fans and his teammates after Saturday’s 4-1 loss to Newcastle United.
Silva, who on the occasion, made history as Chelsea’s oldest ever outfield player at 39 years and 64 days, didn’t enjoy the type of game he would have hoped for before kick off.
The centre back made a number of costly mistakes during the game, with one of them directly leading to Newcastle’s third goal of the day.
While attempting to pass the ball to a teammate around the Chelsea 18-yard area, Silva hesitated a little, and had it nicked off him by Joelinton, who fired a shot into Robert Sanchez’s goal to pile more misery on the Blues.
Reece James got sent off moments later, with Newcastle adding a fourth through Anthony Gordon to enter the top six of the Premier League. Alexander Isak and Jamaal Lascelles scored the Magpies’ first two goals, while Raheem Sterling scored Chelsea’s only goal of the afternoon.
Taking to his official ‘X’ account after the game, Silva said he was ‘devastated’ with the outcome of the result, and his performance.
He wrote: “I’m devastated. It wasn’t a good day for us. I would like to apologize to everyone for the defeat, especially to my teammates who believe in me and support me every day. I take full responsibility. Let’s gather strength and come back stronger.”
