Chelsea tried to sign another striker before the end of the summer transfer window, according to a report on the Athletic via Metro.

The report claims Chelsea tried to sign Nottingham Forest striker and Nigeria international Taiwo Awoniyi before the transfer window closed on Friday night.

However, Nottingham Forest rejected Chelsea’s advances and Mauricio Pochettino has been left to soldier on with just Nicolas Jackson and Armando Broja, who has only just returned to full fitness following a long-term knee injury, as his only recognised strikers.

Awoniyi has started the season in sensational form, following on from his exploits at the end of last term when his goals helped Steve Cooper’s side avoid relegation.

The Nigerian international has scored three goals and provided one assist in four Premier League games this season.
