Chelsea lost 3-1 to Brighton, a game that the Blues led comfortably at half-time.
A red card to Trevoh Chalobah would see Chelsea go on to lose 3-1, with Enzo Maresca’s substitutions rather weakening the team than strengthening it.
Explaining the reason for his changes, Maresca said: “We did the first change which was Josh for Andrey after the red card. Then the reason why Malo came on was because Minteh was one-v-one with Reece so we tried to give Reece some help.
“The last change, Jorrel had cramp and was asking for a change.
“For sure, we need to learn and we need to learn quickly. It can be a mix of experience or it can be a mix of a simple mistake.
“If you watch the first-half today, you don’t think about the injured players because we were in control and dominating the game.
“In the last two games, unfortunately, with two red cards, everything changed.”
