Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has spoken ahead of the Blues’ Champions League clash with Benfica — a game that will see him go head-to-head with former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho.
“It will be a privilege to face Jose tomorrow. A legend for this club, not only for this club but for different clubs,” Maresca said.
“For me, it’s first of all a privilege to represent this club in the Champions League. For sure it’s also a privilege to face a fantastic manager like Jose.”
On Fans Singing Mourinho’s Name
The Portuguese coach remains adored at Stamford Bridge, and Maresca was asked how he would feel if Chelsea fans sang Mourinho’s name during the match.
“The fans may sing Mourinho’s name. How much do you want them to sing your name? What do you need to do?” a reporter asked.
Maresca responded with honesty: “Probably continue to win trophies. I remember for some moment of last season I think it was Southampton away where the fans were starting to sing we have our Chelsea back.
“To be honest, I would like one day for sure but it’s not my target. I’m already happy if they can sing ‘we have our Chelsea back’.
“Because that means that as a team, as a club, we are doing something important.”
The Chelsea coach made it clear that he isn’t obsessed with chants of his name but with restoring Chelsea’s identity and success.
Mourinho may always be revered, but Maresca knows the only way to be truly embraced by Blues supporters is by delivering silverware and performances that make fans believe again.
