Chelsea’s clash with Manchester United was overshadowed by an early blow, as star man Cole Palmer was forced off after just 20 minutes.
Blues fans were left stunned, but Enzo Maresca has now shed light on the worrying reason behind the substitution.
Speaking after the game, the Chelsea head coach admitted that Palmer has been struggling with a long-term groin problem. “Cole had a test this morning.
He was not 100% fit. He made a fantastic effort but he was not 100%,” Maresca explained.
Despite his fitness concerns, Palmer’s determination to feature in such a big fixture was clear.
Maresca revealed just how much the 23-year-old pushed himself: “It’s a problem for a long time for him, his groin. He wanted to play this game, so the effort is huge but after 20 minutes, he decided it was too much.”
Palmer has been Chelsea’s standout player this season, carrying the team with goals, assists, and consistent creativity. His absence will be felt heavily, and fans will now be anxiously waiting for updates on his recovery.
The fact that this is described as a “problem for a long time” is a real concern – especially given how dependent the Blues have become on him.
For now, Maresca and his medical staff will be hoping rest and treatment can ease the problem before it becomes a season-defining issue.
Chelsea can ill afford to lose their talisman for an extended period, especially as the business end of the campaign approaches.
