Chelsea fans left the Gtech Community Stadium with mixed feelings after the Blues’ 2-2 draw with Brentford. Despite showing resilience to come from behind and even take the lead, Enzo Maresca’s side once again let victory slip through their fingers in the closing stages.

Speaking after the game, Maresca couldn’t hide his frustration at the late equaliser but admitted it’s part of football: “It’s a shame [to concede late] but it happens.”

Chelsea were trailing 1-0 early on but showed character to turn the game around. The Blues scored twice to lead 2-1, only to see Fabio Carvalho’s late strike deny them all three points.

Maresca stressed that the team should have managed the final moments of the game better: “Probably we could manage that moment of the game better but in the end we concede and lose two.

“We try to win every game but know we won’t win every game. It’s a shame because we conceded so late.”

The Chelsea boss didn’t shy away from pointing out the source of the danger.

Brentford’s long throw-ins have been a weapon all season, and Maresca highlighted the Blues’ inability to deal with them in key moments: “First of all try not to concede the throw-in. They have Kayode, Jensen, Schade and even Pinnock who are strong on throw-ins.”
