Bayern Munich’s deadline-day move for Nicolas Jackson has already sparked heated debate in Germany. The Bavarians secured the Senegal international on a season-long loan from Chelsea, with the deal including a conditional purchase obligation worth €65m (£54m/$71m).

After an on-off saga—where Chelsea initially recalled Jackson following Liam Delap’s injury—Bayern finally struck an agreement.

The 24-year-old arrives in Munich as depth behind Harry Kane and will wear the No.11 shirt. But not everyone is convinced.

Former Germany international Patrick Helmes has delivered a scathing verdict on Bayern’s decision.

“Brutal figures,” Helmes told Sport.de. “€16.5 million is incredible for a loan deal. Add to that the €65 million if he makes certain appearances. In total, we’re looking at the [Nick] Woltemade deal. That’s completely overpriced. He’s no Harry Kane.”

While acknowledging Jackson’s promise in England, Helmes didn’t hold back on what he sees as the striker’s limitations: “For me, he’s still just a backup for Kane, nothing more, nothing less.”

Helmes even went as far as predicting that Bayern won’t activate the purchase clause: “The purchase will not happen.”

From a Chelsea standpoint, this deal is fascinating. The Blues managed to negotiate a huge potential fee for a player many still view as a work in progress.

If Jackson thrives in Munich, Chelsea could bank €65m and move on with fresh funds for Enzo Maresca’s rebuild. If he struggles, Jackson will return to Stamford Bridge with more European experience under his belt.

For now, though, Bayern have taken the risk—and Chelsea fans will be watching closely to see if Patrick Helmes’ brutal assessment comes true.
