Chelsea are set to face Palmeiras in the quarter-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup in Philadelphia — but one of the most intriguing subplots of the tie is the potential involvement of Estevao Willian, the Brazilian wonderkid who is on his way to Stamford Bridge.
In May 2024, Chelsea struck a verbal agreement with Palmeiras to sign the then 17-year-old forward, widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in world football. The deal was agreed for an initial €34 million, rising to €57 million with performance-related add-ons. However, FIFA regulations prevent the move from being completed until Estevao turns 18 on April 24, 2025.
That means Estevao remains a Palmeiras player — and with Palmeiras also competing in the expanded Club World Cup, the highly rated teenager is eligible to face his future club when the two sides clash on July 5.
According to The Athletic, there is no clause in the agreement that would prevent Estevao from playing against Chelsea. That’s in contrast to the Premier League and many domestic competitions where players on loan are barred from facing their parent clubs. Because Estevao has not yet officially transferred, and the Club World Cup follows FIFA regulations rather than domestic rules, he can play freely.
It’s a unique twist for Chelsea fans, who could get their first look at Estevao not as a Blue, but as an opponent. Having already made waves in Brazil with his technical brilliance, dribbling flair and eye for goal, Estevao will no doubt want to impress — even if it’s against the very team he’ll soon be joining.
The move to Chelsea is expected to be completed once Palmeiras’ journey in the tournament ends and the summer transfer window officially opens.
For now, all eyes will be on Philadelphia, where Chelsea’s defence may have to stop the player they hope will soon be lighting up Stamford Bridge.
