Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has voiced his disappointment over Noni Madueke’s performance during Chelsea’s 2-0 win over Los Angeles FC in the Club World Cup opener.
Speaking on DAZN, Mikel didn’t hold back as he analysed Madueke’s underwhelming showing on the left flank.
“We need more from Madueke,” Mikel said. “I’ve been frustrated with him in the first half.”
Despite seeing a lot of the ball during the opening 45 minutes, Madueke struggled to influence proceedings in the final third. His inability to beat his man or deliver quality service into the box was a recurring issue.
“He’s had a lot of the ball but hasn’t gone past his man, his final ball was not perfect either,” Mikel observed. “He needs to clean that up in his game, if he does that he can be a fantastic player.”
Madueke started the game on the left wing — a somewhat unfamiliar position for the right-footed forward — but was substituted just after the hour mark as Enzo Maresca sought more cutting edge in attack.
“He gets the ball and doesn’t go past his man or create enough for the team. I need to see him do more,” Mikel added.
The criticism comes at a time when Chelsea are actively exploring the market for a new left winger. The club’s interest in players like Jamie Gittens and Malick Fofana suggests that competition for places in wide areas is only going to intensify.
With the transfer window still open and Madueke facing scrutiny from club legends like Mikel, the 23-year-old will need to respond with stronger performances if he hopes to hold onto a starting spot in Maresca’s plans.
