Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca has ended speculation — at least for now — over who will start in goal for the Blues at the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s tournament opener against LAFC, Maresca offered clarity on the goalkeeper hierarchy: “Robert Sanchez is No 1 and then Filip Jorgensen is No 2.” The announcement confirms that Sanchez, who had a turbulent 2024/25 campaign filled with inconsistent performances, remains the club’s first-choice shot-stopper under the new manager.
Filip Jorgensen, Chelsea’s other summer signing from Villarreal, has been named as the backup. But the shake-up doesn’t stop there.
The Italian tactician also confirmed the addition of young Belgian keeper Mike Penders to the squad, following his recent move from Genk. “Then we will take a final decision,” Maresca added, hinting that the competition remains open depending on performances in the tournament.
Penders, just 19, arrives with high expectations as one of Belgium’s brightest young talents. His inclusion suggests Maresca is looking to evaluate all his options thoroughly, especially with transfer links to AC Milan’s Mike Maignan still lingering in the background.
While Maresca’s words place Sanchez firmly in pole position, his final remark opens the door to changes based on how things unfold in the United States. With Chelsea eyeing the Club World Cup as a statement-making tournament, all eyes will be on the goalkeepers — and on who ultimately earns the manager’s trust on the biggest stage.
One thing is certain: competition is fierce, and Maresca isn’t afraid to shake things up if needed.
