Borussia Dortmund director of football, Sebastien Kehl, has finally spoken out on the collapsed transfer of highly-rated winger Jamie Gittens to Chelsea – and his comments reveal there’s more to come in this saga.
Chelsea made a strong push to sign the 20-year-old before the FIFA Club World Cup, but negotiations stalled after the Blues failed to meet Dortmund’s valuation.
Speaking to Tage Spiegel, Kehl explained the reasons behind the failed deal:
“We spoke on the phone, in the end we did not agree, because we have different ideas about the current value of the player.”
This confirms previous reports that Chelsea submitted three offers, including a final bid worth €55 million, which Dortmund swiftly rejected. Despite the setback, Kehl insists the Bundesliga side is happy to retain the winger — at least for now:
“Jamie definitely makes our team better. We are glad that he is there. We are in a good exchange and see how things are shaping in the future.”
But the story doesn’t end there. Kehl’s comments suggest Dortmund are open to selling Gittens eventually, and a summer move could still be on the cards — perhaps even after the Club World Cup concludes:
“Of course, at some point, if you take a player with it, you also have to sell. I assume that his market value will not fall. We will see to what extent we can keep it until the end of the tournament. There will be talks again.”
For Chelsea fans, the message is clear: the door isn’t closed. Gittens remains a top target and discussions will likely resume once the transfer window reopens next week. With Chelsea looking to add more pace and flair to their attack, this transfer saga is far from over.
