Chelsea fans had plenty to smile about following France’s recent Nations League clash with Germany — and it wasn’t just the result. Right-back Malo Gusto delivered a masterclass on the international stage, completely nullifying one of Europe’s most sought-after young talents, Florian Wirtz.

The 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen star — currently the subject of a high-stakes transfer pursuit from Liverpool — was left frustrated and ineffective throughout the match.

Gusto marked him out of the game, limiting the German playmaker to zero successful take-ons (0/5). For a player hailed as one of the most exciting attacking midfielders in world football, it was a humbling experience.

Chelsea fans on social media were quick to highlight the performance, praising Gusto’s composure, timing, and defensive intelligence. It’s no surprise that many are now confidently touting him as Reece James’ long-term successor and possibly even Chelsea’s undisputed starter at right-back if current form continues.

Gusto’s growth under pressure has been one of the most encouraging signs for Chelsea supporters, especially given how frequently he’s had to step up due to Reece James’ injury issues over the past season.

With Liverpool reportedly offering €134 million (£113m) — including €100m guaranteed — for Wirtz, who is valued at €150m by Leverkusen, there’s every chance the German star could be lining up at Anfield soon.

If the deal goes through, Chelsea fans can now feel confident knowing Malo Gusto already has Wirtz in his pocket — literally and metaphorically.

Fan Reactions:

“Gusto put Wirtz in his pocket and zipped it shut. That’s our right-back!”

“They’re bidding £113m for a guy Malo Gusto locked up all night. Good luck with that, Liverpool.”

“Gusto vs Wirtz in the Premier League? Bring it on. We’ve already seen the outcome.”

See some other reactions:

@leroyeferaomo: “Malo when he isn’t running into midfield is decent.”

@RobertPet73: “Kind of a good sign for Chelsea that Liverpool’s star man can’t get past Chelsea’s third choice RB.”

@thoughts880771: “Gusto is a great defensive right back, gets lost on the inverted position and his crosses are not good. I think he’d be great as RCB in a backline of three.”
