Chelsea’s latest summer recruit, Liam Delap, may still be developing, but he’s already had the seal of approval from one of football’s greatest minds — Pep Guardiola.
Delap joined the Blues this summer from Ipswich Town, but his roots trace back to Manchester City, where his potential was once heralded by Guardiola himself.
The striker made six senior appearances for the Cityzens under Guardiola, though breaking into a star-studded Man City attack proved difficult.
Despite limited first-team chances, Guardiola made a bold statement about Delap back in August 2021, saying via Manchester City’s official website:
“Liam Delap, for me, for the club, is so important for the future.”
The remark came on the back of Delap’s spectacular 2020/21 season with City’s academy side. He was a dominant force in Premier League 2, scoring 24 goals in just 20 games, leading the team to the title. That youth side was managed by none other than Enzo Maresca, who now takes charge of Delap again at Chelsea.
Guardiola’s glowing endorsement is a reminder of Delap’s immense potential — a powerful striker with a natural instinct for goal. And now, under the guidance of the coach who got the best out of him during that unforgettable youth campaign, Delap has the perfect platform to thrive at Stamford Bridge.
With the No.9 shirt on his back and the full faith of Maresca, Delap is one to watch in blue this season.
