Chelsea have seen their opening €35 million bid for Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens rejected, but the Blues remain undeterred in their pursuit of the highly-rated 20-year-old, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
The West London club is expected to return with an improved offer that includes performance-related add-ons, as they look to close the gap with Dortmund’s valuation and strike a deal swiftly.
Gittens, who is believed to be keen on a move to Stamford Bridge, is reportedly pushing for the transfer to go through. The young Englishman sees Chelsea as the ideal next step in his career, especially under a manager like Enzo Maresca, who is known for developing youthful attacking talent.
Chelsea aim to sign the young English winger before the commencement of the FIFA Club World Cup, but Dortmund fans are angry with the offer from Chelsea, as they believe it’s too low.

PapaRose1909: “Would end the negotiations immediately. But here, it’s also our own fault. Who thinks they take us seriously and offer 70 million when the guy plays a maximum of 10 minutes per game?”
FloR_190209: “Chelsea pays 35 million for the third goalkeeper of some English club. But when it comes to players from outside, then such a measly amount… No way under 50 million.”
AIiBVB: “I don’t think much of Gittens, but 35 million is just outrageous – opening offer or not. The guy is 20, an English U21 international, has a contract until 2028, and Dortmund ‘doesn’t have to’ sell him. No reason to let him go for under 50 million, even if I want to get rid of him.”
Fritteusenjong1: “This is as bottomless as how Bundesliga players are traded in the Premier League. The guy’s market value is 50 million and he has 3 years left on his contract — so what’s with 35?! Maybe not 60 after his recent months, but then do 50 + 5 or something.”
