In a transfer twist few saw coming, Sky Sports reports that Arsenal are eyeing a shock move for Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The Spanish shot-stopper, who has fallen far down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge, could now find himself swapping one London club for another — this time to serve as backup at the Emirates.
Kepa, who joined Chelsea in 2018 for a then world-record £72 million fee for a goalkeeper, has never quite lived up to expectations in West London.
Despite flashes of ability, inconsistency and high-profile errors saw him lose the number one spot — first to Edouard Mendy and later to Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrović.
Most recently, Kepa spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Bournemouth, where he enjoyed a solid if unspectacular campaign. The 29-year-old made 31 Premier League appearances for the Cherries, conceding 39 goals and keeping eight clean sheets. While his performances showed improvement, Bournemouth opted not to pursue a permanent deal, leaving Chelsea eager to cash in.
With Chelsea reportedly placing a modest £5 million release clause on Kepa, Arsenal see an opportunity to secure a seasoned Premier League keeper at a bargain price. The Gunners are believed to be in the market for a reliable backup to David Raya, whose move from Brentford was made permanent earlier this year.
From Chelsea’s perspective, the move would represent a significant financial loss, but clearing Kepa’s wages off the books and freeing up a squad spot is a necessary step in the club’s ongoing rebuild under Enzo Maresca.
A transfer to Arsenal would be a surprising turn in Kepa’s rollercoaster Chelsea journey — but with no future at Stamford Bridge, it may be the move that both player and club need to finally turn the page.
