Chelsea are stepping up their pursuit of highly rated Ajax defender Jorrel Hato as they look to fend off competition from Liverpool and other Premier League rivals, according to TEAMtalk.
Following the disappointment of missing out on Dean Huijsen — who opted for a dream move to Real Madrid despite a strong contract offer from Chelsea — the Blues have turned their full attention to securing the signature of Hato, one of the Netherlands’ brightest young talents.
Sources close to the negotiations reveal Chelsea have made fresh contact with Ajax and are expected to begin formal talks soon. The west London club are understood to view Hato as a key defensive target and are eager to complete a deal before the Club World Cup kicks off in the United States.
The 19-year-old has impressed with his versatility and composure, playing both as a centre-back and left-back for Ajax in the Eredivisie. His tactical awareness and ball-playing ability make him a natural fit for Enzo Maresca’s system, which relies heavily on building from the back.
Chelsea will need to move quickly, however, as Liverpool, Arsenal, and Newcastle United are also tracking Hato closely. All three clubs are said to be well informed about his contract situation and availability.
With Champions League football secured and a youthful rebuild in full swing, Chelsea are hoping their long-term project and potential starting opportunities will help sway Hato’s decision in their favour.
