Chelsea’s pursuit of Viktor Gyokeres has come under scrutiny, with Dutch football icon Wesley Sneijder suggesting that the Swedish striker would be better suited to a move to Real Madrid.
Gyokeres, 26, is hot property this summer after a sensational season with Sporting Lisbon, scoring an astonishing 51 goals in 53 appearances across all competitions. The Portuguese club are reportedly open to selling the prolific forward for around £58 million.
While Chelsea are keen to add firepower and are close to sealing a deal for 22-year-old Liam Delap from Ipswich Town, they remain in the market for a more experienced striker—putting Gyokeres firmly on their radar. Arsenal and Manchester United are also interested, although the Red Devils’ absence from next season’s Champions League is believed to have weakened their position.
Barcelona have been credited with admiration too, but Sneijder believes Real Madrid could be the most natural fit for the Sporting forward.
“You have to pick a team which works for your playing style,” Sneijder told Metro, via BetMGM.
“At the moment, maybe Real [should consider signing him]. If it allows Kylian Mbappe to move back to the left then maybe it’s a perfect match.”
Sneijder added: “The position of a striker, it is really important for the team. In the first month when you don’t score, they start arguing, the press will be against you, the fans will be against you because they know you can score a lot of goals and that is what they expect from you.”
