Manchester United loanee Antony has revealed the key reason behind Real Betis’ dramatic collapse in the Europa Conference League final against Chelsea — a lack of concentration.
The Brazilian winger, who had dazzled since joining Betis on loan in January with nine goals and five assists, was left heartbroken in Wroclaw as his side threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 4-1 to the Blues.
Betis had stunned Chelsea early on, taking the lead in the 9th minute through Abde Ezzalzouli. The La Liga side remained in control for much of the first hour, but once Enzo Maresca’s men found their rhythm, they turned the final on its head.
Four second-half goals from Enzo Fernandez, Nicolas Jackson, Jadon Sancho, and Moises Caicedo sealed a famous comeback victory for the Blues — and with it, a piece of history as Chelsea became the first club to win all five major UEFA trophies.
Antony, clearly emotional at the final whistle, was seen in tears and had to be consoled by fellow United loanee Jadon Sancho, who ironically played a key role in Chelsea’s rout.
Speaking after the match, Antony praised Chelsea but pointed to Betis’ mental drop-off as the root of their defeat.
“Right now it’s difficult to say any words, we knew the importance of this final but we lost. Congratulations to Chelsea for the title,” said Antony.
“Concentration was our downfall.
It was a good first half but in the second half, we didn’t have the ball.
We need to remember that it’s a game of 90 minutes and we didn’t concentrate for the entire game.”
Indeed, it was Chelsea’s second-half resurgence — led by Cole Palmer’s two stunning assists with either foot — that shattered Betis’ resolve. The Premier League side looked a different beast after halftime, with Palmer pulling the strings and their forwards suddenly brimming with confidence.
From Antony’s tears to Palmer’s magic, the final in Wroclaw showcased Chelsea’s resilience — and the brutal lesson Betis learned about switching off at the highest level.
