Rio Ferdinand slams Chelsea fans for booing Mason Mount

Chelsea fans made headlines during Saturday’s Premier League clash against Manchester United, and former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand didn’t hold back in his criticism.
In a tense Matchweek 37 encounter at Stamford Bridge, the Blues edged United 1–0 thanks to a determined team performance. But while the result boosted Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification, much of the post-match discussion centred around the reception given to former Blue, Mason Mount.

Mount, who came through the Chelsea academy and became a key figure in the team that won the Champions League in 2021, was booed by sections of the home support throughout the match. The 26-year-old joined Manchester United in the summer of 2023 after contract talks with Chelsea broke down — a move that clearly left a sour taste for some fans.

Following the game, one football fan took to social media to express disappointment with the treatment of Mount. Tagging Rio Ferdinand and journalist Piers Morgan, the fan wrote:
“What do you think about Chelsea fans booing Mason Mount? He was booed by his boyhood club. It must be an absolute disgrace, and the media will be talking about it all next week.”

Ferdinand wasted no time in responding, making his views crystal clear.
“It’s nonsense,” the former centre-back said in the comments.

Mount’s departure from Chelsea was certainly controversial. Many fans felt betrayed by the timing and nature of his exit, particularly after the club invested heavily in new signings. However, others argue that Mount gave his all for the club and deserved a more respectful return.

Ferdinand’s comments add fuel to an already heated debate — should club loyalty be rewarded, even after a player moves on, or does a transfer to a rival club automatically make you a villain?
