Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed a huge boost ahead of Thursday night’s UEFA Conference League semi-final second leg against Djurgarden – he has a full squad available for selection.
The Blues head into the return fixture in Sweden with a commanding 4-1 lead after an impressive first-leg display at Stamford Bridge. Goals from Jadon Sancho and Noni Madueke gave Chelsea a 2-0 cushion at the break before Nicolas Jackson added two more to all but seal the tie.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Maresca revealed the positive news: “We have no new injuries,” he said. “This is good for us. Everyone is fit and (striker) Marc Guiu could be involved in the squad. We are not sure yet, we will make a decision on him, but he is getting closer.”
The 18-year-old Marc Guiu, who joined Chelsea from Barcelona last summer, has been a revelation in the Conference League, emerging as the club’s top scorer in the competition with six goals. However, he has been sidelined for the past three months with a hamstring injury.
Maresca offered more insight into the young striker’s recovery: “Maybe it’s better for Marc to have a few more days of training, but he is very close to being back with us.”
While Guiu’s return may not come in time for Thursday’s clash, Maresca’s comments are a welcome sign that Chelsea’s attacking options are about to be bolstered ahead of what could be a European final.
With everyone fit and the tie largely in their control, Chelsea will be expected to manage the second leg smartly and book their place in the Conference League final – potentially with Marc Guiu watching from the bench, or even making a surprise return to action.
