Chelsea head coach Enzo Maresca has called on midfield star Enzo Fernandez to add more goals and assists to his game, despite acknowledging the Argentine’s improvement in recent weeks.
Speaking during his latest press conference, Maresca made it clear he believes there is more to come from the World Cup winner.
“Enzo, we want more goals and assists,” Maresca stated, setting a clear challenge for the Argentine.
Fernandez has shown glimpses of his quality this season with a handful of crucial goals and composed performances in the middle of the park. But Maresca is demanding even more from his No. 8, suggesting that a consistent double-digit goal return is well within reach.
“He has improved a lot and I think he can be better,” the Chelsea boss added. “He can score between 10 and 15 each season.”
That’s a lofty target for a player primarily known for his passing range and tactical intelligence, but Maresca clearly sees Fernandez as a key attacking force from midfield.
Interestingly, Maresca also made it clear that he sees Fernandez playing in his current role going forward. “He is best where he [plays] is now,” Maresca confirmed, referencing the advanced midfield position Fernandez has often occupied under the Italian.
However, with Romeo Lavia having fitness issues at various points this season, Fernandez has had to drop deeper. Maresca acknowledged this defensive responsibility, saying: “Off the ball, when Romeo or Moi are not fit, he has to do more.”
Despite the demand for more end product, Maresca ended on a positive note: “I think he has good numbers this season,” showing he appreciates Fernandez’s contribution so far but sees an even higher ceiling for the midfielder.
It’s clear Maresca has full faith in Fernandez’s ability to become one of the most complete midfielders in the Premier League. If the Argentine can hit that 10-15 goal target, Chelsea’s top-four hopes—and maybe even more—could be very much alive.
