Chelsea took a commanding step toward the UEFA Conference League final with a dominant 4-1 away victory over Swedish side Djurgarden, but head coach Enzo Maresca is refusing to let his players get ahead of themselves.
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Maresca acknowledged the quality of Chelsea’s performance but was quick to underline the importance of focus heading into the return leg.
“It was the perfect night, an important semi-final and it is a good result. We need to be focused on the second leg,” he said.
The Blues controlled much of the game, asserting their superiority during the opening 70 minutes, but Maresca wasn’t entirely pleased with how the match ended. His concern? A slight dip in intensity that could prove costly in future fixtures.
“The first 70 minutes was good but then in the last 20 minutes we dropped a little bit but we cannot drop, we cannot relax because otherwise it is complicated.”
The Italian tactician is determined not to let complacency creep in as Chelsea prepare for the second leg at Stamford Bridge, where they’ll look to finish the job and book a place in the final against either Real Betis or Fiorentina.
“We have done a good job but now we need to finish the job at home.”
The tie may feel close to over for fans after such a convincing away result, but Maresca is keeping everyone grounded. For Chelsea, the mission is far from complete.
