Former Premier League goalkeeper Ben Foster has sparked debate among Chelsea fans after boldly claiming that Aaron Ramsdale would be an upgrade on the current crop of goalkeepers at Stamford Bridge.
Despite Ramsdale’s recent relegation with Southampton, Foster believes the England international would be a wise signing for the Blues.
Speaking on his popular YouTube channel, Foster was asked if he’d consider Ramsdale as a good fit for Chelsea — and his response was emphatic. “Yes, I would,” Foster said. “He would be an upgrade…”
Foster’s comments will raise eyebrows among fans of Robert Sánchez and Djordje Petrović, who have both had spells as Chelsea’s No.1. However, Foster was quick to defend Ramsdale’s quality despite Southampton’s struggles.
“Rambo needs to find a team that are going to be a solid, settled Premier League team,” he added. “And you’ll get another 10 years out of Aaron Ramsdale at the top level.”
Ramsdale, 26, joined Southampton from Arsenal last summer in a surprise £18 million deal after falling out of favour at the Emirates. His move was intended to give him consistent minutes, but it’s instead seen him caught in the middle of a relegation battle.
While many fans might question the logic in targeting a goalkeeper who just went down, Foster’s argument is rooted in Ramsdale’s undeniable talent and experience. He was instrumental for Arsenal during their resurgence under Mikel Arteta and has several England caps to his name.
Chelsea have spent big on goalkeepers in recent years — most notably Kepa Arrizabalaga and Edouard Mendy — but stability between the sticks remains an ongoing issue. Whether the Blues decide to act on Foster’s advice remains to be seen, but one thing’s clear: Aaron Ramsdale won’t be short of admirers if Southampton are forced to sell.
Would Ramsdale truly be an upgrade at Stamford Bridge? According to Ben Foster, the answer is a resounding yes.
