Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson has given his Premier League top five prediction – and it’s not good news for Chelsea fans. In a bold claim, Merson believes Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest will finish above the Blues and book their places in next season’s UEFA Champions League.

According to Merson, the top five – which will qualify for the Champions League under the new format – will consist of Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest.

“As it stands at the moment, I would say, I think it’ll be Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest,” Merson said.

That means no place for Chelsea, who are currently chasing a European spot after a turbulent season under Enzo Maresca. Merson admitted the Blues still have a shot – but only just.

“Chelsea, it is in their hands in a way because they’ve got Newcastle and Forest to play, but if you look at the fixtures, Chelsea haven’t got a give-me in any of their fixtures,” he added.

It’s a reality check for Chelsea supporters who have seen flashes of quality from the team in recent months, but consistency has been a major issue. With big games still to come against direct rivals like Newcastle and Forest, Merson suggests Chelsea’s fate lies in their own hands – but they’ll need near-perfect results.
