Chelsea’s push for a Champions League return gained momentum following a narrow win over Fulham, with Pedro Neto’s decisive strike keeping the Blues in the hunt.
But while fans dared to dream of Europe’s elite competition returning to Stamford Bridge, head coach Enzo Maresca made it clear he’s keeping expectations grounded.
Speaking after the 2-1 win, Maresca didn’t shy away from offering a stark reminder to supporters about where the club has been in recent seasons.
“The goal from Pedro doesn’t change the season,” Maresca said bluntly in his post-match press conference.
“I said already, in last three years have never been in the Champions League spot. The goal doesn’t change it.”
For many Chelsea fans, Neto’s winner was a moment of hope – a sign that maybe, just maybe, this turbulent season could end on a high. But for Maresca, the victory was more about continuing progress rather than sparking dreams.
“It’s already a good season. The goal gives us a chance to be there,” he added, suggesting that while qualification is possible, it’s not the benchmark for success this term.
A top five finish could prove crucial if England secures five Champions League spots due to UEFA coefficient rankings. However, Maresca’s comments serve as a timely reminder that the journey back to the top is still very much a work in progress.
Chelsea’s position remains precarious – Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest trail the Blues only on goal difference, with Forest holding a game in hand. There’s little margin for error, and Maresca knows it.
While the supporters crave a return to Europe’s grandest stage, Maresca appears to take it a game at a time.
Maresca does not rate Chelsea among elite teams. Paraphrase few of his comments: “We are not at the level of Arsenal, Liverpool and others”. No wonder he’s not gotten a point from any of the elite clubs.
“We’re not aiming to win the league”. We dropped points against Ipswich and and it’s normal. Maresca is just not ambitious and must be shown the exit. The earlier the better.
