Should Chelsea retain Jadon Sancho? This is what Enzo Maresca has to say after his fine performance against Ipswich

Jadon Sancho’s Chelsea journey continues to spark debate among fans and pundits alike, especially after the winger’s impactful display in the 2-2 draw against Ipswich Town.

Coming off the bench to score the Blues’ equaliser, Sancho once again reminded everyone of the quality he can bring when he’s in rhythm.

Following the match, head coach Enzo Maresca was asked directly about Sancho’s future at the club, and while he praised the 24-year-old’s contributions, he also suggested no decision has been made yet.

“Yeah, no, he’s doing well,” Maresca said when asked about the Manchester United loanee.

“Today we decided to start with Pedro and Noni.

“Noni is back from injury, scored twice the other day. Pedro is doing well.”

Despite not starting, Sancho’s role was always in the manager’s plans. His introduction in the second half brought energy and ultimately led to the goal that rescued Chelsea a point.

“And Jadon is playing almost every game,” Maresca continued. “The idea was just to refresh a little bit with him, knowing that he’s going to give us a good moment, goal assist, and he’ll show himself in the second half.”

Sancho has gradually become a more regular presence in Chelsea’s matchday squads, and his ability to influence games off the bench has proven valuable. The debate now turns to what happens next. Chelsea’s deal with Manchester United includes a £25 million obligation to buy, which becomes optional this summer. However, if the Blues choose not to sign Sancho permanently, they must pay a £5 million penalty to send him back to Old Trafford.

With just weeks left in the season, Maresca is keeping the focus on finishing the campaign strongly before making any long-term decisions.

Maresca concluded: “Then for the future, to be honest, now is the moment. With one month to go, it’s just the focus. It’s about how we can finish, and then we have time to decide.”

What do you think – should Chelsea trigger the £25m option and make Sancho’s stay permanent, or pay the £5m penalty and move on? Let us know in the comments below.
