You Can Have This Lovely Chelsea Bottles
In a week that should have been routine for Chelsea, Enzo Maresca has sparked controversy by pointing fingers—not at his players, but at the fans. Following a disappointing 2-2 draw with Ipswich Town at Stamford Bridge, the Chelsea boss used his post-match press conference to question the level of support from the home crowd.
Maresca didn’t hold back when asked about his team’s lack of composure, particularly after going two goals down in the first-half.
“It’s tough because even in the first 20 minutes… if you are not able to score the first one then the game completely changes,” he said. But the moment that raised eyebrows came when he directly referenced the crowd’s role in Chelsea’s second-half struggles.
“Our goalkeeper plays short and then he goes long for the second goal because of the environment [the fans],” Maresca noted, suggesting Robert Sanchez was influenced by the tension and impatience in the stands.
For a manager still in his first season, publicly calling out the fans—even indirectly—is a bold move. It’s understandable that frustration is mounting. Chelsea’s season has been full of inconsistencies, and the draw against a Championship bound team like Ipswich only adds to the growing pressure.
Maresca tried to soften his comments by insisting, “We are stronger with our fans and we are a better team. It’s up to them to decide.” But that will do little to calm a fanbase already divided over his tactical approach and squad selections.
Chelsea supporters are passionate, and they demand results. While it’s fair to ask for unity and backing in difficult moments, the expectation is also that the team shows fight and dominance—especially at home, against lower-league opposition.
Whether Maresca’s comments were a plea for support or a misjudged criticism, they’re sure to dominate fan conversations in the days to come.
The bloke is an idiot. All he does chop and change. We are 3-0 up against Liege and he picks a weaker team against Dipswitch. He should have gone for the kill. It’s been happening all season. Get rid of now.
