Cole Palmer has been one of Chelsea’s brightest sparks this season, but the goals have suddenly dried up—and fans are starting to take notice.
The 22-year-old attacking midfielder was once again unable to find the back of the net in Chelsea’s 3-0 UEFA Conference League quarterfinal first-leg victory over Legia. Palmer started the game but was substituted at halftime for Noni Madueke, with the score still locked at 0-0. That switch proved decisive, as the Blues came to life in the second half, scoring three goals—two from Madueke and one from youngster Tyrique George.
Palmer’s substitution—and Chelsea’s improvement after it—will raise eyebrows. It’s now 13 matches without a goal for the England international, a stark contrast to the red-hot form he displayed earlier in the campaign. So far this season, Palmer has 14 goals and 8 assists in 36 appearances, but none of those goals have come in recent weeks. The last time he scored was back in January.
To be fair, Palmer hasn’t suddenly turned into a bad player. His link-up play remains tidy, his positioning smart, and he’s still creating chances. But the end product has clearly dipped, and it’s becoming more of a concern with every passing game. Perhaps it’s fatigue—after all, this is his second season as a regular starter at the senior level. Or maybe teams have figured him out and are giving him less space to operate, or it’s just ill luck.
Whatever the reason, the pressure is mounting on Chelsea’s best player. Maresca will need to find a way to get the best out of him again—because a confident, firing Cole Palmer is still one of Chelsea’s most dangerous weapons.
The good news? Chelsea won without him being at his best. But if this team really wants to lift silverware this season, they’ll need Palmer back among the goals sooner rather than later.
