As Chelsea prepare to face Ipswich Town this weekend, all eyes will be on a certain young striker who could soon be swapping shirts at Stamford Bridge — Liam Delap.
The 22-year-old striker has been making headlines with his performances this season. With 12 Premier League goals to his name already, Delap has established himself as one of the most promising young forwards in the country. Unsurprisingly, Enzo Maresca — now at the helm at Chelsea — knows all about his qualities.
“In terms of numbers, he’s doing fantastic,” Maresca said ahead of the clash. “The way he plays and fights — he’s always there. But he’s an Ipswich player. He’s an enemy on Sunday because we need to beat them, and then after the game I wish him all the best for the future.”
Maresca’s comments were respectful but revealing. He didn’t hide his admiration for Delap’s style, even going as far as comparing him stylistically to elite No. 9s like Harry Kane and Erling Haaland. “To compare Liam with Kane and Haaland is a bit early,” Maresca cautioned. “But in terms of style, he’s that kind of player. They are all real nines. They are nines inside the box.”
And it’s exactly that kind of striker Chelsea may be in the market for this summer.
According to reports, Delap could be available for just £30 million due to a relegation release clause in his Ipswich contract — a bargain in today’s transfer market for a player of his potential. With Chelsea keen to bolster their attacking options, Delap is believed to be one of the names under serious consideration.
Still, Maresca reminded fans that Chelsea already have a capable No. 9 in Nicolas Jackson, who he feels is finally getting the recognition he deserves after an injury-hit spell.
“With Nico, we are a completely different team compared to when he was injured. We are happy with Nico as our striker,” said Maresca.
So, could Chelsea go into next season with both Jackson and Delap in the squad? It’s a possibility. With Chelsea set to return to European football and looking to compete on multiple fronts, depth will be key. And Delap, with his work rate, physicality, and instincts in the box, could be the perfect complementary option.
For now, however, he’s just another opponent — and one Chelsea must shut down this Sunday.
But come summer? He might be wearing blue.
