Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has shared his thoughts on Christopher Nkunku’s ongoing struggles at Stamford Bridge, and his analysis hits close to home for many Blues fans wondering why the Frenchman hasn’t yet set the Premier League alight.

Nkunku arrived with huge expectations after an impressive spell at RB Leipzig, but injuries and inconsistent game time have limited his impact. Yet according to Mikel, it’s not just fitness or form – it’s about where he’s being asked to play.

“He’s not a number 9. Every time he plays there, he just looks lost,” Mikel said on his podcast.

“I was watching him against Brentford, he looked lost every time. He couldn’t hold up the play, couldn’t run behind, and couldn’t run into the channel.”

Mikel’s observation points to a growing concern under Enzo Maresca’s early reign: the misuse of attacking talent. Chelsea fans were hopeful Nkunku could be a spark in a team still searching for rhythm and consistency. But instead, he’s been deployed as a striker, a role that clearly doesn’t suit his strengths.

“It just looks like he doesn’t know what he’s doing there, because that is not his position, he’s a number ten,” Mikel continued. “He’s not a bad player. Yes, he’s had his injuries, and sometimes that slows you down quite a bit.

“He’s still young, there’s still so much that he can give. And I believe that he’s still a great player, but we need to find the best position for him.”

Nkunku thrives as a second striker or attacking midfielder – someone who links midfield to attack, not someone who leads the line. His intelligent movement, creativity, and ability to pick passes in tight spaces make him dangerous behind a traditional No.9, not as one.

But it seems the Frenchman has lost confidence in his ability and now seems to be struggling in any position he plays under Enzo Maresca.
