Chelsea’s inability to find the back of the net in their goalless draw against Brentford may have left fans frustrated, but manager Enzo Maresca is standing firm in his belief that the Blues possess one of the best attacks in the Premier League.
Despite Chelsea failing to score at the Gtech Community Stadium, Maresca was quick to shut down any concerns about his team’s attacking firepower.
“No [it’s not a concern], it will be very important to get some more goals from the ones at front,” Maresca said, addressing the media after the match.
His side recorded over 20 shots in the game, dominating much of the attacking play, but a combination of poor finishing and resolute defending from Brentford meant the Blues came away with just a single point.
“But again, I think we are third or fourth top scorers in the Premier League. So I don’t have the feeling that this team need to score more goals.”
Although Maresca slightly overstated Chelsea’s position — they are currently the fifth-best goalscoring side in the league behind Liverpool, Tottenham, Manchester City, and Arsenal — his point still stands. The stats show that Chelsea have been more than capable of creating and converting chances this season. But consistency, especially away from home, has been their biggest enemy.
The goalless draw at Brentford extended Chelsea’s winless run in away Premier League matches to eight games, during which they’ve managed just three goals. That’s a glaring contrast to their overall scoring form and an issue Maresca must address if the Blues are to climb higher up the table.
Still, the Chelsea boss remains optimistic about the chances his side creates.
“And also when we even when we don’t score like today, we shot more than 20 times,” he said. “For sure we want more goals from the players up front, even from set pieces in general, we want to score more goals… but [we] create chances every game. Probably we’ve only struggled to create chances in one or two games.”
That’s where Maresca sees the silver lining — the opportunities are there. The attacking movement is there. The final touch? Not quite.
With a front line boasting the likes of Nicolas Jackson, Pedro Neto, and Cole Palmer, there’s undoubtedly quality. But Maresca will know that quality must soon translate into consistent end product — especially on the road.
Chelsea fans may have to show patience, but Maresca has a strong confidence in his side’s offensive strength and has sent a clear message: the goals will come.
