Chelsea returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a 1-0 victory over rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, but the post-match headlines were hijacked by Spurs boss Ange Postecoglou’s furious rant at VAR, rather than Enzo Fernández’s match-winning strike.
The clash between two London giants had all the ingredients of a classic: end-to-end football, midfield battles, and two goals ruled out after lengthy VAR checks. But for Postecoglou, it was the latter that proved too much.
Following the match, the Australian manager let rip at the technology that he claims is “killing the game” and turning football into a spectacle of confusion rather than excitement.
“You are standing around for 12 minutes. It’s just killing the game,” Postecoglou fumed, referring to the long stoppages and VAR delays. He didn’t hold back, even referencing an incident from the previous night’s Merseyside derby, suggesting inconsistent officiating depending on who is in the VAR seat.
But while Postecoglou raged at the screens, Chelsea fans will be more than satisfied with the result and performance.
Enzo Fernández’s composed finish was enough to earn the Blues all three points and propel them back into the top four — a position few thought possible earlier this season.
VAR did rule out a stunning volley from Moisés Caicedo and later chalked off a thunderbolt from Spurs’ Pape Sarr, but Chelsea were the better side throughout. Fernández pulled the strings in midfield, Caicedo covered every blade of grass, and the defence stood firm against Spurs’ late surge.
Let’s not forget — Tottenham are now winless in four, while Chelsea look more confident with each game. The difference? One team is finding a way to grind out results, while the other is busy blaming technology.
VAR may be a talking point, but make no mistake: this was a Chelsea masterclass, and no amount of controversy can take that away from the Blues.
Up next? More momentum, more points, and hopefully fewer VAR interruptions. But if there are any, we won’t be the ones complaining — especially when the scoreboard favours the Blue side of London.
