Chelsea’s pulsating encounter with Tottenham at Stamford Bridge wasn’t short on drama, controversy, and VAR intervention – and now the Premier League has stepped in to clarify the chaos that surrounded two disallowed goals during the match.

In a game that saw both teams have strikes ruled out after lengthy VAR reviews, tensions flared as fans from both sides voiced frustration. But according to the Premier League, the right decisions were ultimately made – though not without controversy.

Moises Caicedo thought he had doubled the lead for Chelsea with a thunderous volley from the edge of the box, sending Chelsea fans into raptures. But the celebration was short-lived. VAR swiftly stepped in and chalked off the goal, citing a marginal offside by Levi Colwill in the build-up.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and established that Colwill was in an offside position in the build-up and recommended that the goal was disallowed,” the Premier League statement reads.

While the decision was technically correct by the letter of the law, it has reignited debate over whether VAR is sucking the life out of spontaneous moments in football – especially when the infringement is as tight as Colwill’s position.

Spurs thought they’d snatched a lead of their own moments later when Pape Matar Sarr unleashed a rocket past Robert Sanchez. But again, VAR had other ideas. After a pitch-side review, the goal was ruled out, with Sarr penalised for a reckless challenge on Caicedo in the build-up.

“VAR checked the referee’s call of goal for Tottenham – and deemed there was a foul by Sarr on Caicedo in the build-up and recommended an on-field review. The referee then overturned the original decision and the goal was disallowed, with Sarr then cautioned for a reckless challenge,” the statement added.

Chelsea fans will feel vindicated by that call, as replays showed Sarr clearly catching Caicedo high on the ankle – a dangerous tackle that deserved punishment. The incident not only reinforced Caicedo’s growing influence in Chelsea’s midfield but also highlighted his bravery and resilience, having taken the hit and continued the match.

The Premier League’s statement may have provided clarity, but it hasn’t silenced the debate. VAR’s influence continues to divide fans, but in this case, Chelsea supporters will feel justice was served – twice.

The bigger question now is whether VAR will continue to dominate the headlines or if the game can return to being about the football itself. For Chelsea, however, the fight, passion and control they showed against Spurs offer plenty of positives moving forward.
