Chelsea goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic is leaning towards extending his stay at RC Strasbourg beyond this season, casting further doubt on his future at Stamford Bridge. The Serbian shot-stopper, currently on loan at the French club, has been in impressive form and has hinted that he would be open to staying if Strasbourg secures Champions League qualification.

Speaking in a recent press conference, Petrovic addressed speculation about his future, saying via GetFootballNews:

“I am focused on finishing the season in the best way. We’ll see after what could happen this summer. It could be a very good option to stay here if Strasbourg qualify for the UEFA Champions League.”

The 25-year-old arrived at Chelsea from New England Revolution in the summer of 2023 with high expectations, having made a name for himself in Major League Soccer. Despite making 31 appearances for the Blues, he struggled to establish himself as a key figure and eventually lost his place in the starting XI. That led to a loan move to Strasbourg for the 2024/25 season, where he has since rediscovered his best form.

Petrovic has been a crucial part of Strasbourg’s impressive Ligue 1 campaign, making 23 appearances, conceding 27 goals, and keeping eight clean sheets. His performances have helped propel the French side into contention for a Champions League spot, and he appears to be relishing the opportunity to continue in France.

Despite being contracted to Chelsea, Petrovic’s long-term future at the club looks uncertain. Even if he returns in the summer, he will have to compete with Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen for a starting role. However, with Chelsea still seeking a world-class goalkeeper to solve their issues at the back, Petrovic may struggle to cement himself as the club’s No.1 under Enzo Maresca.

A lot will depend on Chelsea’s stance regarding their goalkeeping situation, but if Strasbourg secures a top-four finish, Petrovic could push for either another loan or a permanent switch. For now, his focus remains on finishing the season strongly in France, but his latest comments suggest his future at Chelsea is far from certain.
