Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell, currently on loan at Crystal Palace, has opened up about his difficult spell at Stamford Bridge before securing his move away in January.
The England international found himself out of Enzo Maresca’s plans, leaving him in a tough position where he had to train alone for much of the season.
Reflecting on that challenging period, Chilwell admitted:
“I was training by myself a lot of the days.”
With no place in Chelsea’s matchday squads, he had to wait patiently for an opportunity to leave, knowing that his fitness would be crucial wherever he ended up.
“You’re not involved in the matchday squads, and you kind of just wait for the opportunity for when you’re gonna go somewhere.”
Despite the setback, Chilwell remained professional, ensuring he was physically prepared for his next challenge. Now enjoying his time at Crystal Palace, he explained the importance of staying in shape for a mid-season move.
“If you go somewhere in January and you’re miles off the pace, you’ve got to put the work in. The only person who is losing out is you.”
With his Chelsea future uncertain beyond this season, Chilwell will be hoping to use his Palace loan spell to prove himself once again.
