Former Chelsea and Tottenham player Jason Cundy has lavished praise on Eden Hazard, hailing him as the best player he has ever seen at Stamford Bridge.
However, Cundy also believes that despite his immense talent, Hazard never had the desire to be the best in the world.
“Hazard is the best Chelsea player I’ve ever seen,” Cundy stated. “But when everything comes so easily… He didn’t want to be the best in the world. He didn’t want to be Cristiano, he didn’t want to be Messi.”
Hazard, widely regarded as one of the most gifted players in Chelsea’s history, mesmerised fans with his dribbling, vision, and match-winning ability. But Cundy suggests the Belgian was content with his level rather than striving to reach the heights of football’s all-time greats.
“Hazard was happy doing what he did. I don’t know what he was doing during the week because I didn’t see that. But every Saturday, when Eden stepped onto the field, he was the best player on the pitch,” Cundy added.
The Belgian maestro enjoyed seven incredible years at Chelsea, winning multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, and a Europa League trophy before moving to Real Madrid in 2019. While his natural ability was unquestionable, Cundy’s comments reignite the debate over whether Hazard could have gone even further had he possessed the relentless drive of Messi or Ronaldo.
Regardless, for Chelsea fans, Hazard remains one of the greatest to ever wear the Blue shirt.
