Chelsea legend John Terry has voiced his disapproval of Reece James being deployed in midfield, urging Enzo Maresca to stick with the club captain in his natural defensive role.

James, traditionally a right-back, has been pushed into midfield recently, with Maresca hinting that the 24-year-old could have a long-term future in the position. However, Terry isn’t convinced.

“I see him as a defender. I don’t like it, to be honest, people drifting in [to midfield]. I think it is more confusing,” the former Chelsea captain told BBC.

“Midfielders are very comfortable with their back to goal. When defenders step into those roles, it is probably the opposite. We are probably not as comfortable receiving the ball with our back to goal.”

James has struggled with injuries this season, but whenever he has played, his versatility has been on display. While Maresca believes he could thrive in midfield, Terry’s comments highlight a more traditional perspective—one that many Chelsea fans may agree with.

With the Blues still adapting to Maresca’s tactical setup, it remains to be seen whether James will continue in midfield or return to his familiar right-back role.
