Former Chelsea defender William Gallas has cast doubt over Jadon Sancho’s ability to thrive in the Premier League, suggesting that the English winger may not have what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Chelsea secured Sancho on loan from Manchester United ahead of this season, hoping he could rediscover the form that made him a standout at Borussia Dortmund. However, Gallas remains unconvinced and doesn’t see a long-term future for him at Stamford Bridge.

“With players as talented as him, I just don’t get why they don’t deliver, why he isn’t doing what he did at Borussia Dortmund,” the Frenchman said.

Sancho made an encouraging start at Chelsea, but his performances have been inconsistent. Gallas believes the winger must show much more if he hopes to prove himself in England’s top flight.

“We thought he could shine like he did at Borussia Dortmund – and he did at first. But you’ve got to be consistent. He needs to step up more, but right now, he’s not giving us what we want to see from him. If he goes back to Manchester United now, it means he’s failed. It means he can’t reach that next level, that the Premier League might just be too tough for him,” Gallas stated.

With Sancho’s future uncertain, Chelsea will have to decide whether to make his move permanent. His contract at United runs until 2026, and his €16 million annual salary poses a challenge for the Red Devils, who are already struggling to find a solution. Chelsea are currently covering €6 million of his wages, but Gallas believes the Blues should walk away from a permanent deal.

According to the ex-Chelsea star, the club would be better off paying a penalty to United to terminate the arrangement rather than committing to a long-term contract. If Chelsea opt out, United could find themselves in a difficult position, as moving on the 24-year-old winger would be no easy task.

Sancho still has time to prove himself at Stamford Bridge, but as things stand, doubts are growing over whether he can handle the demands of the Premier League.
