Chelsea legend John Terry has admitted that he still dreams of one day managing the Blues, though he acknowledges that it’s not something he seriously expects to happen.
Currently working part-time with Chelsea’s academy, Terry has stepped away from full-time coaching after previously serving as an assistant at Aston Villa.
Speaking to TalkSPORT, the former Chelsea captain opened up about his coaching journey and where he stands now.
He said: “I love coaching, and after three years as an assistant, I felt ready to step up as a head coach. So I took a step back to recharge and spend time with my family. Then I went to a couple of interviews, and they were pretty disappointing.
“I stepped aside and now I’m part-time with Chelsea’s academy. I love it, I love being around the lads and supporting them. As for my life right now, I play a lot of golf, and summer’s almost here. I play padel tennis. I’m fit, I’m healthy, I’m spending time with my wife, my family. I’m enjoying life bit by bit.”
Despite stepping away from the intense demands of full-time coaching, Terry hasn’t completely ruled out the idea of managing Chelsea one day. However, he is realistic about the path required to get there.
He went on: “I still have a dream – would I like to manage Chelsea one day? Could it happen if I don’t work at other levels first? Probably not. So I’m not really counting on it. I’m fine with that, I’m happy, but I’ve got all the right licenses, and I’m ready. If the right opportunity ever comes up, I’ll take it.”
For now, Terry remains involved with Chelsea at the academy level, nurturing the club’s next generation of talent. Whether he ever gets the chance to take the reins at Stamford Bridge remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—his love for the club is as strong as ever.
