Enzo Maresca told he’s using Nkunku wrongly

Paul Merson has raised concerns over how Enzo Maresca is deploying Christopher Nkunku at Chelsea, arguing that the Frenchman is not being played in his best position.

Since returning from injury, Nkunku has often been used on the wing rather than in his natural attacking midfield role, something Merson believes is limiting his impact.

“Christopher Nkunku’s position is not on the wing. I feel sorry for him. I like him, I think he’s a good player. He’s one that plays behind the centre-forward,” Merson stated.

The former Arsenal midfielder emphasised that Nkunku thrives when positioned centrally, where he can link up play effectively.

However, with Cole Palmer in exceptional form this season, Chelsea face a tactical dilemma.

“He’s an intelligent footballer, connects things, but the problem is Palmer’s been outstanding. I don’t think Chelsea were foreseeing Palmer being as good as what he was, hence why they bought Nkunku for a lot of money,” Merson added.

Despite being played out of position at times, Nkunku has still managed to deliver impressive numbers, scoring 12 goals and providing 5 assists in 36 appearances for Chelsea this season. However, the debate over his best role under Maresca continues, with Merson making it clear that he sees the Frenchman as a central playmaker rather than a wide attacker.

With Chelsea still shaping their identity under Maresca, it remains to be seen whether the Blues boss will adjust his system to get the best out of Nkunku—or whether Palmer’s form will continue to dictate the team’s setup.
