Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has admitted that he would have loved the opportunity to play under Antonio Conte, believing the Italian’s tactical setup would have suited him perfectly.
Drogba, who enjoyed two spells at Stamford Bridge, left the club for the second time in 2015, a year before Conte took charge.
Speaking in a 2017 interview with Soccer AM, the Ivorian striker revealed his admiration for Conte’s coaching style, saying:
“Yeah, I would have loved [to play under Conte]. I think I could’ve scored a few goals. The way the team is playing, everything is set up for the striker.”
During Conte’s reign from 2016 to 2018, Diego Costa thrived as Chelsea’s main striker, leading the Blues to the Premier League title in 2016/17 with 20 league goals. Given Drogba’s ability to dominate defenders and score crucial goals, it’s easy to imagine him excelling in Conte’s dynamic 3-4-3 system.
Despite never working with Conte, Drogba remains Chelsea’s greatest-ever striker, leading the club to four Premier League titles and securing legendary status with his iconic performance in the 2012 Champions League final.
With Chelsea still struggling to find a world-class No.9 in recent years, fans can only wonder what Drogba would have achieved had he played under the Italian manager.
